The ultimate goal in RvR combat is the sacking of the enemy’s capital city. To do this, an army must invade and take control of the opposition’s homeland. Deciding battles take place in the persistent game world on objective-based battlefields and around fortified keeps that must be taken or defended, as well as in instanced Scenarios that contribute to zone control.

A New Way to Quest
For the first time, players can engage in Public Quests; these community driven Player vs. Environment (PvE) quests help to advance the game’s story and allow all allied players within a certain location to participate in an ongoing, multi-stage battle. This is an example of how every aspect of the game, including PvE content, is geared towards the greater war in some important way. Players are not required to participate in Player vs. Player (PvP) combat, and may aid in the RvR war effort and enjoy the game in its entirety via PvE content.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X Deluxe DVD

I once scared the hell out of my college roommate by popping the shell off our CompuAdd 386SX/16MHz desktop and adding some extra memory in hopes of running Microsoft Flight Simulator 4.0 faster. It didn't help much, but my keg-muddled memories include flashes of Meigs Runway 36, a sky full of flat clouds, and the downtown Chicago skyscrapers -- then primitive gray polygons -- redrawing a bit more smoothly as I rapped the number pad (no joystick) and tried to tip my Cessna Skylane into the side of one especially big boxy rectangle (it was supposed to be the Sears Tower) for the heck of it.

Seventeen years and six versions later, Microsoft Flight Simulator returns with an "X" (like Apple's current OS, it's pronounced "ten") and hoo-boy, what a couple decades will buy you! Like its incremental predecessors, the latest incarnation soups up the visuals, tricks out the world with vehicles on roads and animals in the wild, adds a few dozen ultradetailed airports with baggage carts and fuel trucks, slips in a few new missions and aircraft, and broadens its online networking feature set. What's more: It's a topographical content leviathan, shipping on two (that's right, two) DVDs. You thought that 14GB hard drive install requirement was a joke?

But let's say you already own Flight Sim 2004; what you probably want to know is, should you upgrade? That depends -- are you the sort scanning www.faa.gov daily and building your very own ultralights from kits? Then you're a shoe-in unless I say something like "they dumbed down the flight models," which of course they haven't. So off with you, then -- and be sure to pick up the $70 deluxe version, which includes 24 (versus 18) airplanes, 45 (versus 40) fully modeled airports, 38 (versus 28) realistically represented cities, 50+ (versus 30) missions, and a special Tower Controller feature that lets you play air traffic guru with your friends online.

If, on the other hand, you're an armchair aviator (which I'm guessing describes the majority audience), pick up the basic $50 version for one or both of the following reasons: to gobble up the basics of flight, from trim control to avionics; or -- to heck with learning -- you'd rather whip through the air and go "wow" a bunch while ogling the brand new super-fly scenery. Here's the trick, though...in order to enjoy the stunning new vistas, you need a ridiculously high-powered machine. Just ignore those silly system requirements up top (they're another joke, right, Microsoft?). The recommended specs in our reviewer's guide were: a 3GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 512MB videocard. Ouch.

So why not play on low settings, then? Because with the bells and whistles disabled, Flight Sim X looks just like Flight Sim 2004, which runs pretty darned well by comparison. Crank the detail to high, and yeah, it's a veritable photo shoot...but one that also runs like a photo show. I know you crusty diehards don't care about pulling a smooth 20-30 frames, but trust me: When you're trying to buzz low-ground pylons with the Extra 300 aerobatic plane or hit tricky target rings on moving boats with the new and incredibly cool Air Creation 582SL ultralight, it matters. Enough said, but to see all the pretty -- and that's arguably the biggest "woohoo!" here -- bank on next year's tech.

Or don't. You can certainly enjoy the other new features of Flight Sim X while you wait (say, if you want to go online with a pal and share control of the plane...or just offer your own personalized flying lessons). Missions are also better and more organic, broken into easy, intermediate, and advanced categories ranging from basic flying lessons (more engaging than Rod Machado's -- which are still here, but fork-lifted in and a bit dated) to Red Bull racing sprints∧ slow, thoughtful African safari hunts.

No, it's not the significant leap 2004's Century of Flight was, and performance -- usually unworthy of mention -- is the big sinker here. Otherwise, Flight Sim X is a solid, if not quite spectacular, tenth iteration. Here's hoping the inevitable Flight Sim 11 (or will it be XI?) offers the same visual breakthroughs without beating your PC to a quivering pulp.

Achieving Realism with PC and console games

Playing a PC or game which immerses the player in its folds is an experience that players talk about for years. From people still talk about Legend of Zelda for the Nintendo system and there was nothing remotely realistic about this, but history and the world is huge and sprawling.

We want to do more than simply a control character and a world history and force fed to us. We want to control the world, make the world. We need to grow within the party. A point A to point B, do not cut the mustard the more we want to explore and interact.

The authors of games have a very worrisome. They weave a story that is not only good but great. The story must be understood and be full. There can be no holes in it and the plot must be tight. The characters must be properly represented. There is nothing that can not be written into the world of PC or console games.

Combing spectacle with its history, mainly voice, really adds a sense of real people do and say things real - if the game is well underway. Other sound effects such as weapons fire, doors opening and closing and any kind of psychologically hearing all the effects are golden. Guild Wars: Eye Of The North - Expansion Pack

ArenaNet's Guild Wars series of free-to-play fantasy MMORPGs always marches to its own drumbeat -- but these days, it sounds a little too much like something out of Donkey Konga. The tin-eared Eye of the North expansion marks the series' first entry that doesn't stand alone, instead sequelizing the original Guild Wars: Prophecies for veteran players. In other words, GWEN ain't for first-timers.

The acronym's a mildly clever reference to Prophecies' presumed-dead youngster (and mysterious plot device) Gwen, who's now all grown up∧ still traumatized from the cataclysm that set the Guild Wars series in motion. She and nine other customizable hero NPCs join in your solemn mission to traipse across a handful of newly unlocked areas on the old Prophecies map, saving the world from yet another clichéd demonic incursion.

In a somewhat refreshing move, GWEN shuns Guild Wars' tiered reward structure in story-driven missions. Instead, multilevel dungeon instances populate the map, each yielding fixed experience point rewards -- and move the plot forward with the speed of a runaway train. The fiction's initially divided into three separate paths (each exploring a particular plot thread), which eventually converge for a final string of high-end dungeon crawls. The problem: It's over before you know it. GWEN's easily finishable in a weekend of dedicated play; I'd (liberally) estimate the total campaign content at about 25 percent of the typical Guild Wars game. Suddenly, that $40 price tag (just $10 cheaper than usual) doesn't look like such a bargain, does it?

Then again, if you dig repetition, GWEN's extracurricular activities are perfect for you. While the game mercifully includes only 10 new (and easily bought) skills per class (for a total of 100 new class-specific skills), every side quest and minigame exists to encourage mindless grind, dangling faction-specific reputation rewards before you as a constant carrot. Want those cool class-neutral faction skills to work well? Want to buy new armor (in all its retextured-model glory)? Prepare to kill a whole lotta monsters to "earn" those privileges.

The Hall of Monuments -- ostensibly a bridge between this game and the impending Guild Wars 2, where future characters can claim the titles and treasures preserved here -- is the most egregious offender. It's an ill-conceptualized monument to inefficiency, allowing you to put only the most menial of your "accomplishments" on display: your elite armor (only if you grind for the platinum to buy it), favorite heroes (only if you repeatedly run challenge missions for their armor upgrades), weapons (only GWEN weapons, ensuring plenty of repetitive endgame "raiding"), and so on. Talk about fun!

This ties into one of the weirdest things about GWEN: It comes off as a hasty advertisement for Guild Wars 2. Some of the racial retcons (the obviously Conan-inspired Norn; friendly factions of Guild Wars' minotaurlike Charr) fit comfortably into the existing fiction&while the impish Asura look (and sound) as if Harry Potter's Dobby, Sam & Max's Max, and a stereotypical Martian got into some sort of freak lab accident. Yes, we know the sequel's en route, without these incongruous elements shoehorned in. But hey -- ArenaNet's making doubly sure we're aware of that, as GWEN's halfhearted presentation is an unmistakable plea for players to forget about this old game and focus on the future.

The only break in the action is the brilliantly designed Watcher's Keep dungeon, beckoning you with its treasures, devious traps, and even throwbacks to classic RPGs. Some may find the relentless combat daunting, and the nonlinear elements lacking. Others may think that with the new character abilities (such as thieves' obscene Use Any Item skill), the game is unbalanced.

But ultimately Throne of Bhaal is an epic ending to a sweeping saga, and gamers who've stuck with their original Baldur's GAte characters all the way through are the ones who'll be most rewarded. Yes, the plotting may need some work, the combat occasionally feels repetitive, and it could've been a little longer, but consider this: We all expect to merely slay Foozle and bathe in the accolades of whatever podunk kingdom we just saved. The original Baldur's Gate ended that way, and each successive iteration of this series has built upon that basic heroic tale, but when Throne of Bhaal concludes, the tale is transcended as it and your character truly become the stuff of myth and legend. When was the last time a saga ended so fittingly? Certainly not the train wreck that ended the Ultima series.

Throne of Bhaal is the resounding ending that the Baldur's Gate dynasty and its fans deserve. You owe it to yourself to play it.
